Due to high winds, rain and general bad weather the team have decided to wait until they get a better weather window before making their way to the Piedra del Fraille refuge. Hopefully by Saturday it will have cleared off and we can try again. Watch this space…

The photograph below of the north west face of Alcazaba was taken yesterday in a brief lull between bad weather fronts. Hardly any rock shows through. The line of the Espolon de Alcazaba is clearly seen, highlighted by the shadows behind.

The weather in the month has been strange for the Alpujarras. The first half of the month saw unusually warm and clear conditions. Little snow was to be found on the high peaks. In contrast the second half has seen very mixed weather with prolonged periods of cloud and rain. Indeed, some of the heaviest rain seen in these parts for many years with 49mm in one hour on 22nd December.

Includes temperature, rainfall, humidity, barometer, wind speeds, wind chill etc. The station is a Davies Vantage Pro2 and is situated in Lanjaron. The month was characterised by unseasonally high temperatures (26.4C) and little rainfall (19mm). Towards the end of the month the temperature dropped to normal levels and we had precipitation.

 

Positive signs for all Sierra Nevada winter mountain enthusiasts. Some snow looks like it is on it’s way this coming weekend. A combination of the latest forecasts from AEMET, Meteoexploration and the ski centre all suggest precipitation in the form of snow at higher levels. Indeed, as can be seen below it looks as if temperatures are set to plumet above 3000m, with temperature sof -14 on Mulhacen summit.
