Rescue Services Called to 4 Separate Incidents in the Sierra Nevada

Rescue services from SEREIM (local mountain rescue service) were called to four separate accidents in the Sierra Nevada this last weekend, some have been reported to be serious. With the first snow fall from last weeks weather and the sudden fall in temperature has left the high mountains icy.

Warnings have been given to ensure the use of crampons and that they are properly fitted. There has been a weather warning for the next 24 hours for low temperatures which could get down to -9° C. See weather forecast for Mulhacen

Backcountry skiing excellent conditions

Today was a ski touring day. We parked at the Hoya de la Mora. A short 15 min walk took us to the snow at 2600m. We skied via Borregueilles to near the summit of Veleta. Surprisingly there is a lot of snow! The snow was hard in the morning (perfect for skiing) but by mid-day was beginning to soften and by 2pm was slushy, especially at lower altitudes below 2900m.

On the southern side the snow level is higher with large drifts found above 2800m, Again, if you are travelling before 11am then you may find an axe and crampons useful depending on what route, peak you are doing. After 11am then snowshoes may be more appropriate!

We took axes and crampons today just in case, but didnt need them. I forgot the camera so can’t post some photos until next week when I get some sent in.

4 days heavy rain snow in Sierras

The Sierra Nevada is to get more snow throughout the coming week. This should bring some much needed snow to the higher mountains. I have been informed by a friend working at the ski centre that the centre may close in 2 weeks ie 20th April. This is at least a week earlier than normal. [...]

Mountain Report

Snow above 2700m. Very icy in teh morning but softening into slush by 2pm. Poor for ski touring but good for snowshoeing in certain locations. High temps in valley 24 deg! More rain or snow forecast Tues and Wed next week. Lets hope!

New snow due next few days

At last we may be seeing the return of more white stuff. Snow is forecast over the next few days, maybe down to 2000m. Will report further on Easter Saturday evening after a day in the hills.

Mulhacen and weather update

Better cover on Rio Mulhacen and west flank of Mulhacen. The cold temps have helped consolidation. Rockfall danger still on N face of Mulhacen. New snow falling today (Sunday) and forecast snow for much of the week to come.

North Face Puntal de la Caldera and Mulhacen

North side of Sierra Nevada has good snow down to 2600m. South side patchy. Climbs on Puntal de la Caldera – mix of good hard snow and soft powder. Mulhacen N face thin, some stonefall danger.

Tajos de los Machos and upper Rio Chico area

New snow Sierra Nevada! We couldn’t get all the way to Refugio Forestal La Pluca, as the road was affected by snow. Walked up Las Alegas. Up to 1ft new powder, no base. Bad weather high so aborted attempt on Los Machos. Came down steep slopes near Cebollar Refugio and down to Rio Chico. Wind blown powder drifts up to 2ft at times. New snow down to 1600 below Puente Palo. Seems localised as other areas the snow level is higher.
