The Sierra Nevada makes that fantastic Christmas scene with its snow peaked mountains and its views towards the Mediterranean sea. For those wanting a Cheap Holiday in the snow without paying the prices of the Alps, the Sierra Nevada makes a great alternative. If it is “different” you are wanting, then maybe you would like to try out [...]
The prospects for a good day’s ski mountaineering didn’t look too bright as we passed through Granada this morning. Above the ski town we met fresh snow and icy roads. Then, as we reached the road end at the Hoya de la Mora, we burst out of the gloom to find ourselves in bright early [...]
Good video this! Shows the route from the ski centre (Hoya de la Mora) over to the Elorrieta hut and then descent of the rio Lanjaron valley before the final climb up to the Cerro de Caballo. Final descent would be down the west flank of the peak towards the waiting car at Fuente Fria [...]
Today was a ski touring day. We parked at the Hoya de la Mora. A short 15 min walk took us to the snow at 2600m. We skied via Borregueilles to near the summit of Veleta. Surprisingly there is a lot of snow! The snow was hard in the morning (perfect for skiing) but by [...]
Deep snow last weekend enabled the ski centre to re-open after the official ending of the season. That means we get another weeks skiing. The snow is thick and deep above 2700m. We have been on Trevenque (2000m) in the Cumbres Verdes today, where the route over the summit was affected by powder snow. To [...]
The recent heavy rain followed by Sunday evenings low temperatures left a large covering of the white stuff down to about 1800m. This has since retreated uphill but the whole situation for skiing and snowshoeing is much brighter. Above 2500m there is good cover and above 2750m, deep snow. I took the attached photo today [...]
The normally snowsure slopes of the Caballo are much worse after the recent 1.5 weeks of sun. There is some skiing but a long walk in via Fuente Fria is required. Most prolonged skiing is unfortunately to be found around the ski centre where a 700m descent will be found. The Cerro de Cartujo slopes [...]
High temps in the last few days will have had an adverse effect on the snowpack. The ski centre still has 60km runs open and snow is still ok for ski touring in the following zones……. NW of Cerro de Caballo; NW of Pico del Cartujo and Veleta area. Mulhacen and south of the range [...]
Report on today’s trip. Parked at Fuente Fria, a 45 minute drive on dirt tracks above the town of Niguelas at the foot of the Sierra Nevada. Short 30 min walk to the snow. Snow hard and icy at 11am made going up fast and easy. Near the summit at 1pm the snow started to [...]
Conditions yesterday on Tajos de los Machos. Great skiing in brilliant sunshine. Skis on at 2500m east of Las Alegas. Snow a bit soft on ascent to Cerillo Redondo. Very good cover and lots of safe lines available. Descent from summit was fairly late on in the afternoon and the snow was a bit slushy [...]
