Just how do you work out how many gas canisters you should take for a weeks high level trekking? After many mistakes over the years I think I’ve finally got it cracked! The last straw was on the Patagonian Icecap last November. Weight was critical and I severely overestimated our intended usage of gas for [...]

The Refugio Postero Alto based above Jerez de Marsquesado south of Guadix in Spain’s Sierra Nevada now has a new website. It will provide much information about the hut, situation, weather and more importantly the state of the road to reach it. The Postero Alto Refuge is located at 1,900 meters altitude in the Sierra [...]

A report by James Jackson of his first crossing of the Sierra Nevada in a 5 day trek (los tres miles) starting in Lanjaron and finishing in Jerez de Marsquesado. In June 2010, James joined Spanish Highs Mountain Guides to train throughout the summer with us here in Spain’s Sierra Nevada. He has an interesting [...]

As can be seen from the photo taken a few days ago from the Cerro de Caballo, winter still has the Sierra Nevada firmly in it’s grip. This may affect forthcoming treks such as the famous “Los Tres Miles” trek which aims to cover all the major 3000m plus peaks of the range in a 5 day push.

This group completed “Los Tres Miles” and then decided to walk some more! They walked from Lanjaron in the Alpujarras to the Purta de la Ragua, near La Calahorra (Guadix) in 6 days covering all the major 3000m peaks in the range (27!). Along the way they slid down snow slopes into icy mountain lakes, [...]

The following detailed report is by Chiz Dakin of Peak Images. She joined us on one of our 5 day Los Tres Miles, 3000m peak traverses, in the Sierra Nevada. It provided interesting reading and a good summary of this adventurous trek for those interested in following in her footsteps. Chiz Dakin is an award-winning [...]

The following trip report was sent in by Volker Krenz after a 4 day trek in the Sierra Nevada covering “Los Tres Miles”. This is a wonderful high altitude trek covering the major 3000m peaks in the range. We supported him in his self guided trek by dropping him off at high trailheads above Lanjaron. [...]

Submitted by Yvonne Holland I came upon the idea of a trip to the Sierra Nevada when I was looking for a high mountain trip in Europe that I could do in early June and could be fitted into a week. The traverse of the 3000m summits of the Sierra Nevada matched this requirement perfectly, [...]

So there we were, loaded up with 5 days of equipment and food. Richard, of Spanish Highs Mountain Guides, dropped us off at the trailhead near the Ventura Hut at 2250m above the town of Lanjaron in the Alpujarra region of Andalucia, Spain. The skies were blue and clear as we made our way  onwards. [...]
