If you intend to climb the Cerro de Caballo which lies just above the Alpujarras spa town of Lanjaron in the Sierra Nevada, you may be interested in the following weather forecasting model. Wind speed, Wind gusts, Wind direction, Wind chill (°C), Temperature (°C), Cloud cover (%), Pressure (hPa) and expected Precipitation (mm/3h) are all [...]

It’s always great when your mountain adventures can be accompanied by a four legged friend. I took my husky, Khumbu on a trek into the Sierra Nevada, camping in the upper Lanjaron valley by streams and under a spectacular night sky. This was to be his first overnight trip.  My lightweight summer backpack felt strangely [...]

When we dropped our trainee guide , Clive Fenn, off at a high trailhead at 9 in the morning we didn’t expect him back for 2 or 3 days. Certainly didn’t expect him to stagger, totally spent, into our house at 11pm that same night, after a mega tough 14 hour walking day in the Sierras, including about 2000m of ascent and 3000m of descent!

The Cerro de Caballo is a stunning mountain, when seen from the costa tropical coastline near Salobrena. Now the bad weather has cleared it seems to rise above the surrounding mists and float in the sky.

Last weekend I joined a group of local spanish walkers in, what for them was a pilgrimage to find the source of the spa waters of their Alpujarras town of  Lanjaron. The source is high up in the Sierra Nevada mountains at the Laguna de Lanjaron at the head of the Rio Lanjaron valley. We [...]

A man of 35 years was rescued yesterday from the slopes of the Cerro de Caballo (3009m) after falling down a slope. His companions alerted the Guardia Civil who then used a helicopter for the rescue. He was transferred to the Traumatology Hospital of Granada after losing consciousness and in a state of shock. There [...]

Report on today’s trip. Parked at Fuente Fria, a 45 minute drive on dirt tracks above the town of Niguelas at the foot of the Sierra Nevada. Short 30 min walk to the snow.  Snow hard and icy at  11am  made going up fast and easy. Near the summit at 1pm the snow started to [...]
