I guess it had to happen eventually. What is the world coming to when you can’t even walk the hills without having your gear stolen. I came across a recent incident when a spanish man had his crampons, boots and ice axe stolen whilst trekking from the ski centre and Elorietta to the Cerro de [...]

Ascent of Cerro de Caballo from the Ventura above Lanjaron

The heat necessitated an early start so by 9am we were high above Lanjaron in the Alpujarras and heading for the trail head forming the start of our ascent up the Cerro de Caballo (3009m). This mountain is in the SW sector of Spain’s Sierra Nevada and is generally quiet and free of the paraphernalia [...]

Trekking the 3000m peaks of the Spain's Sierra Nevada

The following trip report was sent in by Volker Krenz after a 4 day trek in the Sierra Nevada covering “Los Tres Miles”. This is a wonderful high altitude trek covering the major 3000m peaks in the range. We supported him in his self guided trek by dropping him off at high trailheads above Lanjaron. [...]

Fantastic colours on the Cerro de Caballo above Lanjaron

I saw at first hand the legacy of the great winter snowfall of 2008/2009 yesterday on a trip up to the Ventura trailhead in the Sierra Nevada mountains above Lanjaron. July is normally a dry and dusty scene of browns and greys but as we rounded the corner above the Lanjaron valley we saw a [...]

Nice video produced by Manolo Figueroa (Mountain Club Sierra de Pinar) of the Cerro de Caballo and surrounding area above Lanjaron. Taken during a recent ascent by the normal route it still shows snow lying above 2800m and an ice encrusted Laguna de Caballo. Technorati Tags: caballo, Trekking

Winter climbing potential on the Cerro de Caballo

Just had a 2 day exploratory trip to investigate the winter climbing potential that exists on the Cerro de Caballo peak above Lanjaron in Spain’s Sierra Nevada. The crags and gullies are found at an altitude of 2800+ on the NE and E faces of the summit cone. We parked the car at the Ventura [...]

Good video this! Shows the route from the ski centre (Hoya de la Mora) over to the Elorrieta hut and then descent of the rio Lanjaron valley before the final climb up to the Cerro de Caballo. Final descent would be down the west flank of the peak towards the waiting car at Fuente Fria [...]

The recent heavy rain and high temps has washed out snow cover below 2700m. Above 3000m there has been some significant falls of wet snow. Yesterday and overnight the freezing levels dropped considerably so that there is now extensive icing. Further low temps today and tomorrow should help consolidation. Ski touring – still poor. Best [...]

The normally snowsure slopes of the Caballo are much worse after the recent 1.5 weeks of sun.  There is some skiing but a long walk in  via Fuente Fria is required. Most prolonged skiing is unfortunately to be found around the ski centre where a 700m descent will be found. The Cerro de Cartujo slopes [...]

Ski touring Cerro de Caballo

Temps reaching 18 deg in the valley, gave freezing levels of +3300m! Snow was dripping off the summit area. The photo shows a better snow cover than is actually there. It is suferficial above 2200m and only above 2700m does this overlay and old hard and consolidated snow. There is some drifting on N and [...]
