- Wed, 01 Feb 2012 16:27:02 +0000: Severe cold weather coming into Spain from the north - Forums - Weather, Mountain & Snow reporting
AEMET has issued an alert for extreme cold weather throughout Spain this coming few days. In the Sierra Nevada conditions will be arctic! On Mulhacen and above 3000m air temps may be between -15 and -20 and together with strong winds, 40-60km/hr+ will give extreme windchill. In those conditions no part of the body should be exposed. The cold will ease over the weekend.

THE METEOROLOGICAL AGENCY REPORTS:
1 .- Weather phenomenon: Cold wave.
2 .- Geographical scope : Peninsula and Balearic Islands.
3 .- Beginning of the situation: Thursday, February 2, on the northeast peninsula.
4 .- Duration: Until Sunday, day 5, at least.
5 .- Degree of probability: Very likely (70-90%).
6 .- Location of the weather: From the next morning will be a cold air intake from the European continent, driven by winds from the North, will affect the Peninsula and Balearic Islands, recorded very low temperatures, well below the usual for these dates.
The outbreak of cold air will begin this morning in the northeast peninsula, extending along the Thursday and Friday throughout the Peninsula and Balearic Islands, with widespread frosts, which even reached broad coastal Bay of Biscay, Mediterranean and Balearic Islands. Minimum temperatures are expected C/-10 -5 ° C and maximum not exceeding 3 ° C / 5 ° C over large areas of the interior. Lower values will take place on Friday and Saturday in areas of the northern half, where, locally, the maximum shall not exceed 0 ° C. During the whole episode in high areas of the Peninsula will be less than the minimum -10 ° C, even in high mountain areas could reach temperatures of about -20 ° C.
Between this afternoon and early morning hours of Thursday the passage of a front from north to south through the Peninsula rainfall will lead to weak, with the snow level down to sea level in the northern peninsula and about 600 m in the southeast . Later, because of the continental air mass, cold and dry, no rain is expected only in the Peninsula, except in the eastern Cantabrian Sea, east of Catalonia and the Balearics, where snow can occur at any altitude.
Especially significant in this situation is the presence of moderate to strong winds from the north will produce a wind chill of cold considerably lower than indicated by the thermometers.
7 .- Notification of future upgrades or end : Unless significant changes in the expected development, AEMET not issue a new special notice. It is recommended closer monitoring and updated air situation through its forecasts and warnings of adverse events This is available on the website: http://www.aemet.es - Thu, 12 Jan 2012 19:29:39 +0000: Looks like finally some snow for the Sierra Nevada - Forums - Weather, Mountain & Snow reporting

- Sun, 01 Jan 2012 17:09:37 +0000: Mulhacen (3482m), Spain - summit panorama video on 30th December 2011 - Forums - Weather, Mountain & Snow reporting
We had a group on the summit 30th Dec 2011. Southern slopes quite sparse of snow but still plenty to go at on the northern and eastern slopes. Fantastic weather!

Great pics….helpful. We are arriving 22nd may and intend an assault on Mulhacen sometime in the week ahead…forecast looks very promising!? We want to make just a day of it and would welcome your choice…from Trevelez or Capilliera? We are happy to return same way and a summit will be determined by weather, conditions and group state of mind.
Any thoughts?
many thanks.
Hi Ken
As I write this its raining heavily. 19mm in the past hour! Snowing again above 2500m. And this is Andalucia in May. Should be ok for next week but check out http://www.spanishhighs.co.uk/weather-sierra-nevada.php regularly before you go for up to date mountain weather.
Route choice? Easy way in a day is up and down the south ridge from the Hoya del Portillo. 2 cars necessary to return to Trevelez or Capileira by different route. South ridge was virtually clear of snow up to yesterday (apart from some easy angled snow patches). After the snow today and tomorrow????? Do you all have crampons and ice axes?
Regards Richard
I was delighted to find your reports on the Sierra Nevada. But I noticed something was “wrong.” Looking about, I found I was in Spain, not California!
Delightful!
I find it remarkable that both the Sierra Nevada Ranges are experiencing such a similar Spring.
If you are curious about the conditions in California’s Sierra Nevada, on the other side of the world, check out my Sierra Nevada website;

I’m going to pay visits to this site to keep tabs on my favorite mountain range’s “Sister Mountains.”
My site incorporates google translate for all the main Euro languages, so come on by and check it out! I meet many Euro hikers and climbers every season (as well as German Tourists…) at Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite.
I give free advice to backpackers planning Sierra Nevada Trips, so if you are planning a trip to the “new” Sierra Nevada, hit me up.
