In the last 2 days our guide, Mike Elston, has been attempting Mulhacen with 4 clients. The heavy snowfall of the past week suggested that a certain amount of snowshoeing might be necessary. The first day on the approach to the Refugio Poqueira they found snow above Cortijo Tomas, which then became deep on approach [...]

Unbelievable but true. About a foot of new snow overnight down to 2400m and its 19th May! We started off from a snowy Hoya de la Mora at 9am and headed south for Veleta before donning snowshoes and dropping down leftwards into the San Juan bowl. Good job we had the snowshoes on as the [...]

Deep snow last weekend enabled the ski centre to re-open after the official ending of the season. That means we get another weeks skiing. The snow is thick and deep above 2700m. Loads of Snow!

The recent heavy rain followed by Sunday evenings low temperatures left a large covering of the white stuff down to about 1800m. This has since retreated uphill but the whole situation for skiing and snowshoeing is much brighter. Above 2500m there is good cover and above 2750m, deep snow. I took the attached photo today [...]

Conditions on the north

The recent heavy rain and high temps has washed out snow cover below 2700m. Above 3000m there has been some significant falls of wet snow. Yesterday and overnight the freezing levels dropped considerably so that there is now extensive icing. Further low temps today and tomorrow should help consolidation. Ski touring – still poor. Best [...]

Much needed heavy rain

Raining heavily today. Just to get out, we walked up the Poqueira Gorge where the weather steadily worsened throughout the day. By Cortijo Thomas the showers turned to heavy consistent rain. In the end it was too much to handle and we retreated down to the best tapa bar in Capileira where we should have [...]
