Yes, I know it’s June, but there is still plenty of snow fun to be had in the Sierra Nevada. An early start meant we managed to catch the best snow conditions and had a great days climbing around the Cerro de Caballo above Lanjaron in the Alpujarras.

Andalucia’s Sierra Nevada lends itself to 2 or 3 day mountain trekking. There are high start points that give access to magnificent mountain scenery. For those with limited time available in Spain, these crossings of the range allow you to experience the mountains at their best. Spanish Highs Mountain Guides of Lanjaron, in the Alpujarras, have developed these crossings into a series of excellent adventures.

Outside the tapas bars of Lanjaron temperatures reached 30 degrees. 2500m above we donned our duvet jackets as an icy wind tore across the white snow filled plateau. Such are the contrasts this year in southern Spain’s Sierra Nevada, a legacy of the worst winter weather in living memory.

The incredible amount of rain this winter has left the ridges quite unstable and appropriate protection and precautions must be taken. Good [...]
If you ever needed convincing of the winter mountaineering potential here in Spain’s Sierra Nevada, then you should take a look at this atmospheric video.
Great video taken by spanish climbers on the Chorreras de la Mosca below the Laguna de la Mosca, north side of Mulhacen. Shows the potential on the north side for ice climbing. long approach and bivvy required at Cueva Secreta.

Neil Wilson, who completed an alpine introduction course with ourselves here in the Sierra Nevada, has sent us these photos from his alpine trip in 2009. Great achievement and photos!
