Ascent of Cerro de Caballo from the Ventura above Lanjaron

The heat necessitated an early start so by 9am we were high above Lanjaron in the Alpujarras and heading for the trail head forming the start of our ascent up the Cerro de Caballo (3009m). This mountain is in the SW sector of Spain’s Sierra Nevada and is generally quiet and free of the paraphernalia [...]

Birds of prey sightings when walking in the Alpujarras and Sierra Nevada

There seems to be birds of prey all over the place at the moment whilst walking through the Alpujarras or middle altitudes of the Sierra Nevada. It really is a rich time of year to visit, especially if you are a twitcher!

Our new Lanjaron webcam is up and running

Our webcam overlooking the town of Lanjaron in the Alpujarras has been upgraded after a successful 3 year stint. We decided the time has come for a replacement and we invested in a Y-Cam White housed in it’s own weatherproof shell. The new camera is an improvement in quality over the old one and gives a much wider angled view. It has been repositioned, as a tree has started to impose itself on the old one and the plastic bucket that acted as a rain housing has started to crack!

After the rainfall comes the sun and white mountains

The rains that have bombarded the Granada area in the past week have finally stopped. We ventured out today onto rural tracks between Pinos de Valle and Guajar Alta to get a view of the mountains from the south west. The white clad peaks of Cerro de Caballo, Tajos Alta and Cerrillo Redondo dominate the view with Lanjaron nestling at the base. Snow level is about 2300m.

Soaring with Griffon Vultures high on Cerro de Caballo

The peak of the Cerro de Caballo has been a long time favourite of mine. I guess it’s my “home” mountain, as it sits above the town of Lanjaron in the Alpujarras, Andalucia, where I live. Yesterday we took guests Simon Fenn and his family on a day trip to the summit. The dirt tracks [...]

Walking to the source of the spa waters of Lanjaron

Last weekend I joined a group of local spanish walkers in, what for them was a pilgrimage to find the source of the spa waters of their Alpujarras town of  Lanjaron. The source is high up in the Sierra Nevada mountains at the Laguna de Lanjaron at the head of the Rio Lanjaron valley. We [...]

Fantastic colours on the Cerro de Caballo above Lanjaron

I saw at first hand the legacy of the great winter snowfall of 2008/2009 yesterday on a trip up to the Ventura trailhead in the Sierra Nevada mountains above Lanjaron. July is normally a dry and dusty scene of browns and greys but as we rounded the corner above the Lanjaron valley we saw a [...]
