Plan for restoration of mountain refuges in the Sierra Nevada

Describes a fine day out in the mountains with “Accion Sierra Nevada” and learning of the plans to repair and maintain our mountain refuges in the Sierra Nevada.

13 members of Accion Sierra Nevada met last Saturday at 8:30am at the Hoya de la Mora and made the 3 hour ascent to the Refugio Elorrieta (3187m) via Lagunillas and the traverse below the Tajos de la Virgen. A nice walk which brought welcome relief from the searing heat in the valleys.

After lunch at the spectacular balcony east of the refuge we discussed plans for the future restoration work.

  • Refugio de Caballo – the roof still needs to be waterproofed before the coming winter. When ice melts during the day then water seeps in and soaks the floor. It was decided to repair the roof of the weekend of 8th and 9th September. Mules will be taken up carrying materials together with as many helpers as we can get. Accion Sierra Nevada will announce details in August.
  • Refugio Elorrieta – Architect plans and costs have been submitted to the Junta de Andalucia for financing. We await the results.
  • Refugio Cebollar – work will be started this autumn to fix the doors and make the windows weather tight.

If you can publicize these efforts in a bid to attract either donations or willing hands we would be very grateful.

Thanks to all the members involved last Saturday. Great to be involved with like minded people, in putting something back into the mountains!

More details about the huts, shelters and refuges of the Sierra Nevada can be found on our comprehensive guide.
