Ski touring Veleta, Cartujo and Picon de Jerez

We have just had a few days ski touring here in the Sierra Nevada with a group from Italy. We made the most of marginal conditions and skied on Veleta, Pico de Cartujo and the Picon de Jerez.

On day one we set off from the Hoya de la Mora above the ski station at Pradollano. Ascended Veleta via the Barranco de San Juan, Los Posiciones and the shoulder to the summit. The descent of  San Juan proved entertaining before a reascent to the Virgin de las Nieves and Hoya de la Mora.

Day 2 was a long day. An ascent of the Pico de Cartujo via the NW slopes before a narrow tricky ridge to the Elorietta and finally descent back to the Hoya de la Mora.

Day 3 we changed locations and moved east to a start point at the Refugio Postero Alto. An ascent to Ladrones before walking round to the Picon de Jerez and finally a descent of the Barranco del Alhori.

There are few complete itineraries available in this poor (for us) snow year. Every day the skiing was tricky with changeable snow conditions and difficult sections in descent. Nevertheless, everybody had a great trip and enjoyed their trip to the Sierras.
