The bad winter just past has left the Sierra Nevada with a legacy of snow covered mountains ideal for mountaineering and backcountry skiing even though we are nearing the end of May!

I have just dropped off some clients at the Hoya del Portillo above Capileira on their way to an ascent of Mulhacen. On my way back down the mountain I captured these shots of the eastern facing mountain wall from Tajos de los Machos through to Veleta (3398m). The snow extends down to 2600m and lower in the sheltered valleys of the Rio Toril. There are some deep drifts of over 3m in places. Still ideal for ski touring or snowshoeing, although for mountaineering routes, you should remain on the northern side of the range and start early.
