A German snowboarder had to literally burn the money in his pocket, because he had fallen on a chair lift that had stopped leaving him high and dry. He did not have a mobile phone to call for help. The height of the chair was considerable and he feared he would break his legs if he jumped. It is estimated that he burned about 110 euros.

The information below has been translated from the excellent blog by Pepe Badaje.

Chairlift and passenger

Dominik Podolsky, a 22 year old German snowboarder, hung on the chair for six hours, from 16,30 h to 22,30 h. At first he began to yell at the last skiers who remained and even a worker, but no one heard. When the night began to fall, he began burning scarves, cards and everything he had in his power so that someone could see the flame and could come to his rescue. He did not have mobile phone and was afraid to jump about 10 feet and maybe break his legs.

The man began to use some methods against hypothermia he had learned during military service, but as night fell the temperature dropped to minus 18 º C. He burned tissues, restaurant bills, business cards, and eventually had to use the cash that was carrying. At 22.30 h a worker from the ski centre was alerted and the lift returned. They found him burning his last ticket for 20 euros. He claims that he burned a total of one hundred euros.

Apparently, he took the chairlift down about the time the lifts shut down. The man is considering suing the chairlift manufacturer, Hochzillertal (Austria), where it was made and also the ski centre.

Surprisingly, the snowboarder had only a few symptoms of hypothermia that needed to be treated in hospital, and that same night was able to go home.
