Chiz in South America. Driving Argentinas Ruta 40 and Ruta 150

Now it was time to test my “driving on the right-hand side of the road” skills! Driving in Mendoza itself was quite scary – I knew the local rule that says you have to have your lights on at all times (or you get fined) but there seemed to be no rules for deciding right [...]

Snow canons pave the way to ski centre opening next weekend

The low temperatures this week are enabling almost 100 snow canons to build up the snow around the Borreguilles and Rio areas of the Sierra Nevada ski area. Working throughout the day and night they are building on the base that was established last weekend when the first snowfalls of the season arrived. The skiing is hoping to start next weekend 5th and 6th December.

White blanket of snow over the Sierra Nevada at last

Yes, at last this weekend we had some snow. All looks white on the Sierra Nevada webcams this morning. Before you run for your skis however, a warning that this is all a bit superficial. In reality, only a foot or so (25cm) has fallen. There is no base to speak of so it may be some time yet before the ski centre can open. Some more snow showers are forecast for this coming week.

A combination of the latest forecasts from AEMET, Meteoexploration and the ski centre all suggest precipitation in the form of snow at higher levels. Indeed, as can be seen below it looks as if temperatures are set to plumet above 3000m, with temperature sof -14 on Mulhacen summit. All the combined forecasts and links are found and consolidated at the Spanish Highs Weather Pages.

Where is the snow in the Sierra Nevada this year?

It is now 22nd November and we still haven’t had any significant snowfalls in the Sierra Nevada. The high temperatures of recent weeks has also meant abandonment of snow making at the ski centre, which was hoping to open in a weeks time. However there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon. Contrast this…………….. With this……………… What a [...]
