A glorious day in the mountains today. Above the Hoya de la Mora and the ski centre there is compacted snow. The Barranco de San Juan has some powder but is quite well compacted generally and makes a fine ski tour. The pisted areas provide good skiing descents (such as the Aguila run) as they are not yet open to the public.
The crests of ridges have much transparent ice around. Ice axe and crampons are essential. You can see the amount of snow from this photo taken today from the summit of the Cerro de Caballo and looking into the Rio Lanjaron towards Veleta. Much better than we had anticipated. The forecast is for up to a metre of new snow this coming week. This will give avalanche conditions for the Christmas period initially.
