Katie Porter and Simon Register recently ascended Mulhacen raising funds for Motor Neurone Disease. Our guide Mike Elston, helped them to reach the summit over 2 days staying overnight at the Poquiera hut, a much better way of traversing the mountain than doing it in a day up and down the easy angled south ridge.
Unlike most people ascending the mountain in summer they did not receive clear skies and warm temperatures. Indeed, the reverse was true. Above 3000m they met almost full on winter conditions, with snow and icy rocks on the ascent of the west flank to the summit.

There was intermittent cloud, mist and the strong winds meant that wind chill was high. Conditions more akin to that of January or February not end of September. A real challenge which they overcame and thus completed their challenge. Congratulations to them for their efforts. Below is a summary from their Justgiving Charity page which can be found at http://www.justgiving.com/katieporterandsimonregister should you wish to contribute to this worthwhile cause.

As Katie says on her Justgiving page……………..
We are treking the Sierra Nevada mountain range in September 2009. The peaks are the highest in mainland Spain, and are very challenging. The trek will involve two days of hard work, approximately 12 hours treking in total.
We are doing this to raise money for MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE (MND). This is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, it means that nerves degenerate and this causes weakness muscles. This disease causes the patients to lose the movement of their limbs, develop difficulty with speech, swallowing and breathing problems.
At present, there is no cure for this disease. MND can effect anyone. It is important to support this charity so research can take place to find a cure and improve people’s lifes who suffer with MND. We both feel passionate about helping this charity. A family friend from the Porter family died of MND a few years ago.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Motor Neurone Disease Association gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation. It would be great to have your support to raise money for this charity. If possible please sponsor us.
Many thanks
Katie and Simon
