Video of the Cerro de Caballo
Nice video produced by Manolo Figueroa (Mountain Club Sierra de Pinar) of the Cerro de Caballo and surrounding area above Lanjaron. Taken during a recent ascent by the normal route it still shows snow lying above 2800m and an ice encrusted Laguna de Caballo.
Can you really ski in Spain's Sierra Nevada in June?
It may be a sizzling 35 deg C in Granada and you are probably within sight of the African coast, but is skiing still possible in mid-June? We headed up to the Sierra Nevada today to find out.
We have had a great snow season here in the Sierra Nevada. The best I can remember for [...]
Sierra Nevada mountain access via ski lifts this summer
For this coming summer mountain access via Pradollano to the Sierra Nevada mountains will be available again. The ski company, Cetursa, will be opening the access gondola to Borreguiles and the Veleta chairlift beyond.
The lifts will open on 27th June and remain open until 30th August. This allows you to climb from 2.100 m of [...]
How to climb Mulhacen in a day in the summer
Just received an email from Dave Broggio who ascended Mulhacen recently. I don’t normally publish testimonials here but thought that the correspondence might assist those who are looking to climb the peak this summer unguided and outside the winter (snow covered) months. It gives route details and access instructions.
There is even a National park bus [...]

Our friends, Sarah and Ali and the rest of the crew at Caballo Blanco Horse Trekking have produced a nice 5 minute video showing the delights of horse trekking in this wonderful part of Andalucia.
The stables are situated on a small plateau at a height of 1200 metres above the spa town of Lanjaron [...]
Who has polluted the pure spring of mountaineering?
I have just recently come across this essay that Reinhold Messner wrote way back in 1965. At the time it was visionary piece and in my opinion it still holds good today, some 44 years later. In ‘the future’, will the challenge for climbers be to do todays bolted routes in a ‘clean’ way, removing [...]
Ways to combat the Ryanair extra toilet charge and others
The Ryanair airline boss, Michael O’Leary, has said that the scheme would be in place within two years.
However, he denied that Ryanair was trying to profit from customers needing a toilet break. The plan aims to discourage passengers from using the toilets onboard, which could then be replaced with additional seating on the aircraft; losing [...]
Patagonian Icefield Expedition video released
Our latest video addition is a recovery operation from a scratched DVD, showing our 2006 Traverse of the Southern Patagonian Icefield. This tour which we try to run every 2 years in November and December circles the Cerro Torre and Fitzroy massifs.
I remember we had camera troubles on the trip. Both video cameras broke and [...]
