A team from the search dive center in La Herradura broke the ice of a Sierra Nevada lake to test dive some new equipment. It was a dive to a level thats was below zero with nylon teflon suits. œWhat really protects us from the cold is the clothes under the special suits, said Luis Pellejero, head of the diving center.
Before starting the dive, the four specialists who participated in the operation were put in some monkey suite type developed tinsulate clothing, an insulating material that maintains body temperature. This new garment that designed and made of nylon, ˜which are leakproof, called dry suits, which repel water and prevent it seeping into your clothes.
This sophisticated kit can be purchased at the price of 1,650 euros. Gone are those days where teams are put inside suits of an insulating material such as those used by the famous Jacques Custeau in arctic diving.
œWe have chosen the artificial lake because it was an ideal space to test these materials under extreme conditions, explained Pellejero. The deal with the logistical support personnel CETURSA, prepared by the immersion and provided the technicians that are able to perform these studies. œThey are professionals who dives beyond the reach of any normal diver and are proffesionals.
CETURSA staff had to open up a hole in the ice, which in some areas reached a meter in thickness. œBeing an artificial lake there is not much to see, but the best was how the light fell through the ice, explained Pellejero.
The divers were an hour and a half under the ice. The loss of orientation and the solution with a cord that served as a guide to help us exit the water. The material responsed to all expectations, announcing that it will not have an icy reception among divers.
