Spanish Highs Mountain Guides are inserting a new itinerary into their walking and mountaineering programmes. The world famous “Camino del Rey” is sometimes called the “scariest path in the world”. For good reason. This old path up the gorge at El Chorro, just north of Malaga, has crumbled and fallen over the years to become loose and dangerous.

It is however a perfect playground for those suitably equipped and trained. A real via ferrata with big drops that requires a cool head and a head for heights.

They have a 2 day itinerary that you can “bolt” on to your Sierra Nevada mountaineering trip. This exciting add-on logically will take you back to Malaga airport for a transfer home.

Day 1
Transfer from Lanjaron (2hrs) or Malaga (45 mins) to El Chorro. For the Camino del Rey there are a few options: doing the first canyon with a 30m abseil at the end can be done in 2h or 3h, if an easy climb is included on the way. One could add the second canyon to that which would take 2h extra. Coming from the other side one can do both the 2nd and then the 1st canyon, coming back the same way and including a little abseil and very easy climb, about 5h. Basically, if someone wants to see the whole camino, then it’s 5h minimum. Groups should be a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4.

Campsite at El Chorro for the night. All facilities here.

Day 2
Rock Climbing on some of the hundreds of rock routes of all grades at El Chorro. Transfer back to Malaga airport.
