Straddling the regions of the Marquesado Zenete and the Alpujarra (Granada and Almera), Puerta de la Ragua is an ideal alternative for enjoying the snows of the Sierra Nevada National Park There is a wide range of outdoor activities available here.
Cross country skiing is the main winter offering but there is also tobogganing, mountain biking, or climbing any of the surrounding peaks. We use the pass as access to some of the best ski touring and ski mountaineering in Spain.
The good snow this year has allowed the Ragua to capitalise and recover after recent bad snow seasons. It has a maximum capacity of one thousand people a day, so it may never reach the numbers of the Sierra Nevada, but that is another of its attractions, since many people are tired of the bustle in the Alpine ski resorts and, increasingly prefer to engage in sporting activities with the natural environment. The network of cross country ski tracks is fully open and offers over 40 kilometers of skiing for all levels. There is a large car pak at the centre with a bar, restaurant and overnight accommodation.
Ski Touring:
Gentle terrain and simple peaks make this an ideal place to start off your ski mountaineering career. There are short and long trips available. We use this as a start point for a 3 day trip over to the Pico de Jerez and hence onwards to Trevelez. Some ski touring options include:
Chullo 2610m
SE of the Ragua. 572m ascent takes about 2hrs. Suitable for beginners or intermediates.
Morr³n de Hornillo 2378m
SW of the Ragua. 340m ascent takes 1.5hrs. Great for beginners.
Morr³n Sanjuanero 2614m
Sw of the Ragua. A longer tour than the Hornillo (above). 664m ascent takes 4hrs. Intermediate.
Ski touring day and multi day trips at the Puerta de la Ragua and Sierra Nevada

An excellent book is “En Esquis Sierra Nevada” by Lorenzo Arribas Mir (Desnivel) which details 96 ski touring opportunities in the Sierra Nevada.
