Many thanks to Simon Mawer who sent me this report after skiing 12th February 2009.

Just thought I would let you know about the conditions yesterday in case you need to update anyone else.

Generally good, but quite icy in place’s, seems that the high winds have blown a lot of the fresh snow away so the base is almost at the surface, especially in Laguna, I had a bad fall on some ice right at the top on Olimpica, but most runs were pretty icy. Off Piste was a thick crust that I could barely penetrate with my snowboard.

Best runs were over the other side above Borreguilles on the Veleta side, all runs here were quite powdery and were the best on piste conditions I found.

The run to Pradollano was mixed, with some icy patches on the way down but not too bad.

The runs behind the Radio Telescope were also very icy as this area is an exposed ridge, again not great but adequate.

Overall I would say that the best of the new snow that fell last week has already come and gone and conditions are average to good at best, certainly not as powdery as the Sierra Nevada web site would have you believe. I have seen better conditions up there in the past, but the weather yesterday was incredible, little wind and quite warm. So I had a great time.

Hope this can be of some help to you.

N.B There will be free courtesy buses taking skiers up to the Sierra Nevada ski slopes this weekend as the resort still has road closures and restricted parking due to the recent snows.
