Unsettled, with some snow next few days in the Sierra Nevada
There is some bad weather arriving tomorrow that will mark a change to our sunny settled conditions. Snow will fall above 2000m and these may be moderate at times. Winds will slowly increase in the next few days.
Have a look at the Mountain Weather Forecasts for more information and the best summary of available resources.
Gully climbs on the Raspones are in condition
This area has been a favourite for some time. Lots of 2 pitch options with a good ridge above to provide varied sport.
It is situated at the head of the Rio Seco. Access is either from the Hoya de la Mora (5hrs) or from the Poqueira hut (2.5hrs). Best stay overnight in either the Poqueira [...]
Mountaineer rescued after falling 400 metres down a slope in the Sierra Nevada
A mountaineer fell from under Mulhacen yesterday after slipping on sheet ice. During the slide he lost his ice axe and helmet whilst falling some 400 metres. The mountaineer suffered broken leg and several other injuries. It is thought he fell on the west flank which is extremely icy at the moment (see our report [...]
New San Juan piste is now open in Sierra Nevada
Today for the first time in the history of skiing in the Sierra Nevada, the ski company, Centursa, has pisted the Valle de San Juan. This is possibly controversial as the valley is outside the normal ski area but within the Sierra Nevada National Park.
This brings the total skiable piste to over 100 kilometres for [...]
Ice Climbing in Spain's Sierra Nevada
If you like me thought the Sierra Nevada too devoid of water to provide much good ice climbing, then you will be pleasantly surprised. A new book by Antonio Jos© Herrera and edited by Nevandasis S.L outlines locations throughout the Sierra Nevada that ice climbing can reliably be performed.
We have often climbed at the Cascada [...]
Winter Mountaineering courses in the Sierra Nevada
Great time for booking for a mountaineering course. The snow is great and the weather sunny. With sunset falling this week at nearly 8pm, this allows for loads of time for mountain ascents or ski touring. Remember to add to this cheap beer, tapas and good company!
Latest photos from clients week ending 21st Feb 2009 [...]
Latest mountain conditions 19th Feb 2009
Road to Cebedilla power station from Capileira has now been plowed but has some icy patches. 4wd advised.
Poqueira Gorge still has large amounts of snow that may necessitate snowshoes later in the afternoons. Apart from that an icy track can be expected in the mornings.
West flank of Mulhacen is very icy. In fact our guides [...]

On piste skiing conditions at the Sierra Nevada
Many thanks to Simon Mawer who sent me this report after skiing 12th February 2009.
Just thought I would let you know about the conditions yesterday in case you need to update anyone else.
Generally good, but quite icy in place’s, seems that the high winds have blown a lot of the fresh snow away so the [...]
Access to the Poqueira Hut and Mulhacen
The best winter access is normally by the Poqueira Gorge via the Cebedilla electric complex. The route is normally very straightforward, protected from winds and more sheltered than other access routes.
We went up to the Poqueira Hut yesterday but because of the recent heavy snowfalls of last week, access is difficult along this route.
Firstly, we [...]
