Part of the area affected by the fire in 2005 which destroyed 3425 hectares of Nature and National Parks of Sierra Nevada will be reforested by planting 100,000 trees above Lanjar³n, under an agreement signed today by the Board and Water Font Vella and Lanjar³n.

The initiative, which will take place in a public area of over a hundred hectares, is part of a comprehensive action plan aimed at restoring the area affected by the fire.

The reforestation plan promoted by the Board is budgeted at more than 10 million euros, of which five are already invested in the project’s first phase (emergency work to strengthen the regeneration of the area affected and prevent erosion).

At present, the project is going through its second phase of implementation, aimed at the restoration of the affected area and which entail an investment of six million euros, of which five will go to the reforestation of mountain and the rest to public aid owners of farms burned.

The philosophy of the project is to support the dynamics of the natural processes of reforestation and treatment of detail ranging from the upper mountain to the lowest.

Other plant species, including the oaks, oak, willow, pine and scrub carrasco may be introduced.

The fire, which affected five municipalities, especially those in Lanjar³n, and Nig¼elas Lecrn occurred in September 2005 and resulted in the arrest of the suspects (a couple of foreigners) who started the fire after getting lost above Lanjaron. They hoped that the fire would facilitate a search. The fire quickly got out of control with the resulting carnage to the forests.
