3 rescued in avalanche in the Sierra Nevada

There have been problems today in the Sierra Nevada. An avalanche trapped 3 skiers, who were eventually rescued. 1 skier suffered ligament damage, the others survived intact.

This was not too far away from the main lift areas. The risks of avalanche are extremely high at present. Do not ski away from the marked pistes! Beware!

The accident happened near the Fuente de Tesoro black piste to the west of the main Rio access area.

This is very unusual in that the avalanche hit the ski area and not the normal danger area of below the Tajos de la Virgen (See http://www.sierra-nevada-news.com/2008/08/avalanche-risks-spains-sierra-nevada/)

The avalanche was at the foot of the Fuente de Tesoro black piste that merges into the blue Rio piste that is used by all to return to base. This is well below Borreguilles and almost back to the ski town.

I also noticed avalanche debris today on the San Juan bowl just adjacent to the Aguila red run from Veleta.
