Above 2000m the Sierra Nevada is very white with little rock or ridges showing through. The snow is up to the knees in most zones but at times is as deep as 1.5m. The west flank of Mulhacen has areas with little snow due to the wind.
Very little consolidation has occurred in the past few days and the going is very hard in the deep snow. Snowshoes are a distinct advantage.
Ski touring – ascending is possible and straightforward, but it is dangerous in descent due to stones and the soft powder with unconsolidated base.
The old road/track from the Cariguela to the Caldera is almost complete with high angled snow. This is not presently dangerous (although care should be taken below Cerro de los Machos – avalanche area!) but it would be very hard and difficult to walk.
The Rio Mulhacen route from the Poqueira hut is very full of powder. Going very is very difficult.
