First heavy snowfall of the year in the Sierra Nevada

Posted by admin - October 9, 2008 - Snow Report, Veleta

Overnight there was snowfall in the Sierra Nevada. A dusting down to 2500m at the Hoya de la Mora above the ski centre. Above 3000m on Veleta there is substantial drifting and the upper part looked very white.

We were rock climbing at Alfacar today but were rained off at 3pm when the rain started again. With the Sierras under a grey blanket of cloud and more forecast for tomorrow, there should be further snowfall above 2500m.

Lets hope for a good solid base to start the coming winter off?

    Hi,

What is the snow situation now? Is there snow up high still? Is it enough to make crampons necessary? What are the daytime temps at 3,000m?

Is there a link to that Veleta webcam?

    So many questions…

There is still snow but there has been a loss today. There is more snow forecast for the next couple of days though.

Dont think there is much consolidation so crampons not strictly necessary although I would always have them in the sack, in case.

For daytime temps check http://www.spanishhighs.co.uk/weather-sierra-nevada.php and http://www.meteoexploration.com/mountain/Iberia.html.

    Veleta webcam link is http://www.sierranevadaski.com/En%20Pista/WEB%20C%20A%20M%20S

    Hope this helps!
