Sierra Nevada ski centre opening 22nd November

News today that the ski centre is set to open for skiing on the 22nd November all being well. As well as good early season snowfall, the temperatures have been low enough to allow snowmaking. The pistes are filling in and bad weather is expected over the next 48 hrs.

The ski area above 1900m has some snow cover with about 25cm snow at the Hoya de la Mora and some drifting. The high winds built continuously during the day, as can be seen from this photo of Veleta with the Virgin of the Snows in the foreground.

Some moderate falls today but easing off tomorrow (Wed) and Thurs. Friday 31st looks to be a very poor day with heavy snow and blizzard conditions in the Sierras.

Cold weather on its way for the Sierra Nevada this week.

Maybe it is just time to start getting wrapped up? The first cold spell of the winter in the Sierra Nevada is evidently on its way!

The website, Meteo Exploration http://www.meteoexploration.com/mountain/Iberia.html, shows very low temperatures for Mulhacen this coming week (hover cursor over Mulhacen for information).

The spanish tend to be quite descriptive with the names for their mountain peaks. The “Boca de la Pesca” or the “Fishes Mouth” does indeed look vaguely like, when seen from Cerro Huenes in the Cumbres Verdes to the north west.

First heavy snowfall of the year in the Sierra Nevada

Overnight there was snowfall in the Sierra Nevada. A dusting down to 2500m at the Hoya de la Mora above the ski centre. Above 3000m on Veleta there is substantial drifting and the upper part looked very white.
