Last Wednesday, some clients reported snow and ice on the summit area of Veleta. More flurries have been reported since on Mulhacen. The coming week will be very unsettled with heavy rain that should produce some more.

My personal opinion is that this is a bit early and that higher temperatures in October are almost certain to wipe any consolidated snowpack away. Last year the first major falls fell in November. My prediction is for the second half of October to produce some “real” snows up high above 3000m. ¿Vamos a ver?

Some Spanish climbing forums are saying that the coming winter will be a good hard one with “normal” snowfall patterns resumed. Of course, they would say that. That is said every year. However, locals in Lanjaron are also repeating the same line. The photo below was taken during my first winter out here. Lets hope for more this winter!
