Change in winter snowfall patterns since 2002!

Posted by admin - July 29, 2008 - Mountain condition reports

The first year I climbed in the Sierra Nevada was 2002. Average snow depth throughout the winter was between 3 and 5 metres. Since then the snowfalls have been getting steadily less and less. For the last two winters it has been between 0.5 and 1.5 metres. Big difference.

But all is not lost. Look on the bright side! The ski touring may be not as good, but for mountaineering, recent conditions have been excellent. In addition, snowshoes were a necessity in 2002, but now only required after heavy snowfall days.

Found this aged photo showing me atop a roadsign in 2002. Those were the days!
